Higonokami VG10 Warikomi KANEKOMA 100mm Walnut Handle
Description
Nagao Kanekoma – Higonokami Folding Knife (VG10 Warikomi, Walnut Handle)
Heritage & History
The Nagao Kanekoma workshop originates from Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, a region famous for traditional blacksmithing techniques that took root during the Meiji era. Early masters such as Murakami-san and Komataro Nagao-san forged knives for general use, laying the foundation for what would later become one of Japan’s most iconic folding knives.
In 1897, merchant Tasaburo Shigematsu brought back a folding knife design from Kagoshima that featured a tail-like lever. Inspired by this design, blacksmiths in Miki—including Nagao—began producing it. Unlike the common single-bevel blades of the time, these knives were made with a double-bevel edge, a groundbreaking feature that quickly distinguished them.
The knife was marketed under the now-legendary name “Higonokami Knife”, rapidly gaining popularity across Japan—so much so that even Emperor Taisho owned one. By 1902, the Higonokami Knife Association was formed, with nearly 40 companies and over 200 artisans involved. However, due to the influx of cheap imitations and changing consumer trends (imported knives, mechanical sharpeners, etc.), the popularity of Higonokami knives declined around the 1950s. Eventually, all but one maker disappeared, leaving Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho as the only surviving craftsman legally permitted to use the “Higonokami” trademark.
