The Nagao Kanekoma Higonokami knives come from Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, the birthplace of traditional Japanese blacksmithing during the late Meiji era. Around this time, master smiths such as Murakami-san and Komataro Nagao-san began forging knives for everyday use, marking the origins of a legacy that continues to this day.

In 1897, merchant Tasaburo Shigematsu brought back a folding knife from Kagoshima, distinguished by its tail-shaped lever. Inspired by this design, blacksmiths in Miki—including the Nagao family—began producing their own folding knives. Unlike the traditional single-bevel Japanese blades of the time, these featured a double-bevel edge, which made them highly practical for everyday cutting tasks.

The knives quickly gained popularity under the name “Higonokami Knife”, becoming a cultural phenomenon in Japan. By 1902, the Higonokami Knife Association was established, boasting over 40 member companies and 200 craftsmen at its peak. Even Emperor Taisho owned a Higonokami knife.

However, with the rise of cheap imitations, imported knives, and modern tools, demand declined around 1955, leading nearly all Higonokami makers to close or change professions. Today, Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho is the only remaining official maker allowed to use the “Higonokami” trademark, preserving this important piece of Japanese cutlery heritage.

This particular model is forged from SK Steel “Warikomi”, a durable and sharp carbon steel with a traditional sandwich construction. Paired with a black saya (scabbard/handle) and flip cover, it represents both functionality and timeless Japanese craftsmanship.
