Visit Us: Our Japanese Kitchen Shops in Jakarta & Bali

You can read about a knife all day — the steel, the grind, the maker's story — and still not know how it feels in your hand. That's the one thing no product page can give you. It's also exactly why we keep two physical shops: one in Jakarta, one in Bali. Same curated catalog, same philosophy — hold it before you buy it.

Here's what to expect when you walk in, and how to find us.

Why visit in person?

Japanese knives are personal. A 210 mm gyuto that feels perfect for one cook feels nose-heavy to another; a santoku handle that disappears in a large hand can overwhelm a smaller one. Weight, balance point, handle shape, blade height under your knuckles — these are things you feel in ten seconds of holding a knife, and never from a photo.

At both shops you can handle every blade on display. Compare an Aogami Super workhorse against a stainless-clad VG-10, feel the difference between a wa (Japanese octagonal) and a Western riveted handle, and let our team narrow it down based on what you actually cook. If you've read our guides on choosing a blue steel or picking your first knife shape, this is where that homework pays off.

And it's not only knives. Both locations carry our whetstones and sharpening gear, Japanese ceramics — including the Banko-yaki donabe clay pots and rice cookers from GINPO — carbon steel and stainless cookware, and the small kitchen tools that quietly make cooking better.

Upscale Living Jakarta — Permata Senayan

Our Jakarta shop sits in Rukan Permata Senayan, on the south side of the city — easy to reach from Senayan, Kebayoran, and the SCBD area.

Rukan Permata Senayan E36

Jakarta doubles as our headquarters, so this is the deepest selection under one roof — if it's in our catalog, chances are you can see it here. Coming for something specific? Message us on WhatsApp first and we'll have it ready at the counter.

Upscale Living Bali — Sanur

Our Bali shop is in the Roxy Sanur Arcade on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai — a few minutes from Sanur beach, and an easy stop between Denpasar and the coast. It has become a favorite for chefs and villa kitchens across the island, and for travelers who'd rather bring home a hand-forged knife than another souvenir.

One Bali-specific tip: the Bali Branch collection on our website shows the live in-stock selection at the Sanur shop — check it before you drive over, and you'll know exactly what's on the shelf that day.

What our team can help with

Beyond picking a first knife, the shops are the best place for the questions that are hard to answer remotely:

  • Matching a knife to your cooking. Tell us what you cook most and how you sharpen (or don't, yet) — we'll steer you between carbon and stainless, lighter lasers and heavier workhorses.
  • Whetstone starter setups. We'll show you the stones we actually recommend for a first kit, and the technique basics to go with them.
  • Donabe and cookware advice. From seasoning a carbon steel pan to first-use care for a GINPO clay pot, we'll walk you through it before you take it home.
  • Gifts. A knife is one of the best gifts there is — we can help you choose one and get it ready to give.

Can't make it in person?

Everything in the shops is on upscaleliving.id, with delivery across Indonesia — and what you see online is the same stock our stores sell from. But if you're anywhere near Senayan or Sanur, come say hello. Handling the knife you've been reading about is the fastest way to know it's the right one.
